WATERVILLE — The Bowdoin College women’s basketball team cruised to its fifth win of the season, 79-49, at Colby on Saturday afternoon.

In the non-conference meeting between the schools, the top-ranked Polar Bears improved to 5-0, while the Mules dropped to 3-2.

Bowdoin took a 16-10 lead after one quarter of play and the Mules were able to stay close with hot shooting in the second quarter. Despite Colby shooting 50-percent from the field in the second period, Bowdoin connected on 53-percent from the field to carry a 40-28 lead into the break.

Bowdoin put the game out of reach in the third quarter, opening the frame on an 11-0 run to take a commanding 51-28 lead following an Abby Kelly 3-pointer and Maddie Hasson layup with seven minutes to go in the quarter.

The Polar Bears led by as many as 31 points in the fourth quarter before settling for the 30-point margin of victory.

Bowdoin shot well from the field, connecting on 49-percent from the floor despite going 3-of-11 from long-distance. Colby shot 29-percent and went 7-of-21 from 3-point distance.

Bowdoin owned a 44-36 edge in rebounding and forced 16 Colby turnovers, converting them into 25 points.

Kelly was red hot, connecting on 10-of-12 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range, to finish with a game-high 22 points. She also had eight rebounds. Hasson had 17 points, four rebounds and four steals.

Keagan Dunbar had 21 points in the loss for Colby.

Bowdoin heads to Maine-Farmington on Tuesday evening for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off. This begins a three games in five-day stretch for the Polar Bears, which also includes a road game at UMass Dartmouth Thursday (7 p.m.) and home game against Bates on Saturday (3 p.m.).

Bowdoin held off a late charge by Pine Manor to take a 70-66 win on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

The Polar Bears evened their record at 3-3, while the Gators fell to 1-8.

After Pine Manor took the initial 3-0 lead on a game-opening 3-pointer from Carlos Martins, the Polar Bears took command with a 13-2 run, capped by a Jack Simonds trey.

Bowdoin pushed its lead to 18 points, 50-32, at halftime and extended its advantage to as many as 22 points in the second half. A Zavier Rucker 3-pointer gave Bowdoin its largest lead, 68-46, with six minutes remaining, but the Gators closed the game on a 20-2 run, including five 3-pointers and closed the gap to as few as four points in the closing minute.

The Gators had an opportunity to cut it to a single-possession game, but a missed layup with 11 seconds to go sealed the win for Bowdoin.

After shooting 62.5-percent from the field in the first half, Bowdoin cooled to 20.7-percent in the second half and finished at 42.6-percent for the game. Simonds finished with 17 points and eight boards, while Hugh O’Neil recorded a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. David Reynolds (14) and Rucker (11) also saw double digits, while Stephen Ferraro had nine points, seven assists and five steals.

Pine Manor got 34 points from its bench, including a team-high 17 from Shaun Miller and 13 from Rasheed Bell.

Bowdoin owned a slim 42-41 edge in rebounding for the game.

Bowdoin continues its non-conference slate tonight against Anna Maria at home at 6 p.m.

Men’s hockey

Erik Wurman made 41 saves as Bowdoin played Colby to a 3-3 NESCAC deadlock on Saturday at Alfond Arena in Waterville.

The Polar Bears are 2-3-1 (1-1-1 NESCAC), while the Mules are stilling looking for their first conference win (1-2-2. 0-2-1 NESCAC).

Bowdoin went up 1-0 midway through the first period. Michael Brown took a shot from the slot that was turned away by Colby netminder Andrew Tucci, but Collin Van der Veen put away the rebound on the right post.

The Mules tied the game with three minutes remaining in the second period. Mikel Morrissey circled the goal and saw his shot deflect off Wurman and trickle over the goal line.

Cody Todesco scored his first of two goals, regaining the Bowdoin lead on a power play just a minute into the final period. The puck bounced out to Todesco on the left post and he was able to put away the rebound.

Colby again tied the game, this time on the power play, as Justin Grillo put a rising wrist shot past Wurman at 10:51.

The Mules took the lead two minutes later. Grillo took an initial shot and the save deflected back to Austen Halpin. Wurman also denied Halpin’s shot, but the follow up bid by Nick O’Connor found the net.

The Polar Bears tied the game with 4:29 remaining in regulation. Van der Veen sent a pass to Sam Topham at the left point. Topham fired a set-up pass to Todesco on the right post for a one-timer.

Colby held a 44-19 edge in shots. Tucci made 16 stops. Bowdoin went 1-for-3 on the power play. The Mules were 2-for-6 with the extra skater.

Bowdoin plays at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening with a 7 p.m. start.

Swimming

Bowdoin hosted the expanded seven team Maine State Meet on Friday and Saturday.

The women finished second overall, trailing Bates 1,105.5-907 but outdistancing Colby by a 907-692 margin. The men finished the meet third overall, falling behind Bates and Colby.

The Polar Bear women won the 200 and 400 freestyle relays. Amanda Banasiak, Marshall Lowery, Sterling Dixon and Mary Laurita posted a 1:37.17 in the 200 freestyle relay. The same quartet won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.17.

Senior Sterling Dixon also added victories in the 200 IM (2:06.15), 400 IM (4:30.60), 200 butterfly (2:07.47), and 100 IM (1:00.32). In the 400 IM, the Polar Bears took the top two spots as Dixon was followed by Claire Wolff (4:43.39) and Nadia Eguchi (4:45.97). Sophomore Laurita was also victorious individually, posting a 24.41 in the 50 freestyle, just ahead of Banasiak (24.75). She also won the 100 fly (57.57). Junior Lowery topped both the 100 (58.21) and 200 (2:06.90) backstrokes.

In the men’s meet, first-year Coleman Komishane took down the Bowdoin school record in the 500 freestyle. He touched in 4:37.77, just faster than senior Daniel Williams’ mark of 4:38.26 set last February. Williams was runner up in 4:40.93.

Komishane was also runner up in the 200 free (1:45.75) and 1,650 free (16:15.04). Williams won the 1,650 free with a 16:01.16. Senior captain Karl Sarier was first to the wall in the 100 free (47.22) and 200 IM (1:56.90). Julian Abaldo raced to a 24.03 to claim the 50 fly state title. First-year Ted Mebust won the 50 backstroke with a time of 24.13, and the 50 freestyle with a time of 21.61. He was also first to the wall in the 100 backstroke (52.71), and was just edged in the 200 back, touching second with a time of 1:56.10.

Mebust, Komishane and Sarier teamed up with Abaldo to win the 400 freestyle relay in 3:09.02. Drew Macdonald, Mebust, Sarier and Abaldo were first to the wall in the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:27.49.

The teams are off for the remainder of the semester and return to the pool with a meet at Bates on Jan. 18.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin lost its second overtime game of the weekend in a 2-1 final against Saint Anselm on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears have played three overtime games this season and sit at 0-6 on the year. The Hawks climbed to 9-1-1.

The visitors broke through 7:31 into the second period. Katy Meehan fought for the puck along the back boards and slipped a pass back up to Gabby Monaco at the top of the zone. Monaco made a quick pass to Kaley Campbell on the left dot for a one-timer.

With 30 seconds remaining, Haley Marshall rang a shot off the pipe.

Five minutes into the final period, Angelina Joyce raced onto the puck as it left the Bowdoin zone and earned a breakaway towards the opposite end. Maddie Scavotto stood her ground and denied the bid.

Joyce rang a shot off the near left post with seven minutes remaining in the game as the Polar Bears continued to look for an equalizer.

Bowdoin escaped a potential second goal by the Hawks as the puck squirted through the pads of Kerri St. Denis and bounced along the goal line. Nell Fusco skated in and cleared the puck back into St. Denis to be covered.

The Polar Bears forced overtime with a game-tying goal from Julia Surgenor. Surgenor and Brooke Solomon traded the puck behind the net before Surgenor curled out along the right circle and put a diving shot past Scavotto.

St. Anselm survived a Bowdoin power play in overtime and scored the game winner at 3:34 at full strength. Amanda Nylander and Kelly Golini both took shots on St. Denis and the rebound kicked right for Kathleen LeFebre to put away.

Both teams were unsuccessful on the power play. The Hawks went 0-for-2 and Bowdoin went 0-for-3. St. Denis ended the day with 35 saves. Scavotto made 32 stops for the Hawks, including 16 in the third period.

The Polar Bears continue their homestand with a 7 p.m. Tuesday matchup with the University of Southern Maine.
