GORHAM — The Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team mounted a third period comeback to defeat host University of Southern Maine, 5-4, on Tuesday evening at USM Arena.

The Polar Bears improved to 3-3-1. The Huskies fell to 1-8-2.

Bowdoin jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first period. Jack Bliss put the Polar Bears on the board at 8:10 off an assist from Collin Van der Veen. Just over a minute later, Albert Washco doubled the total.

The Huskies pulled within one a minute into the second period.

But, Cody Todesco pushed Bowdoin back out to a 3-1 lead midway through the frame.

USM scored a power play goal at 12:36 and another at 19:19 to tie the game at 3-3. An unassisted goal by Cody Braga in the final second of the period gave the Huskies a 4-3 lead.

Austin Ricci tied the game for the Polar Bears five minutes into the third, finishing off a feed from Michael Brown.

Jimmy Duffy recorded the game-winner at 11:26 to regain the lead for Bowdoin. Pat Geary found Duffy for the tally.

Alex Zafonte made 27 saves in net for Bowdoin to collect his first win of the season. Peter Ciccarelli also stopped 27 shots for USM.

USM went 2-for-5 on the power play. Bowdoin went 1-for-2 on the power play.

Bowdoin returns to NESCAC action with a 7 p.m. game at Tufts on Friday.

Women’s hockey

Bowdoin earned its first overtime tie of the season with a comeback 2-2 result against Southern Maine on Tuesday night.

The Polar Bears are still in search of their first win and sit at 0-6-1.

The Huskies received outstanding goaltending to force the tie and left Brunswick with a 3-4-3 mark.

Bowdoin got on the board 2:36 into the game after pinning the Huskies in their own zone for the opening minutes. Tala Glass fired a shot from the top left and Jess Cloutier deflected the puck. Marissa Fichter tracked down Cloutier’s tip at the left post and put the puck away.

The Huskies evened the game seconds after killing a power play in the second period. Grace Simmons left the box and immediately received a feed from Jenson Hamblett. Simmons was behind the Bowdoin defense and skated in for an uncontested shot on goal and converted.

With 40 seconds remaining in the period, Southern Maine took the lead. Following a faceoff in the Bowdoin end, Jill Hannigan plucked the puck off a Bowdoin player’s stick and flicked a shot over Dani Marquez’s blocker.

Bowdoin earned back-to-back power plays midway through the third and evened the game at 10:39, converting on the second opportunity. Fichter controlled the puck behind the net and passed up to Glass on the right point. Glass slid the puck left to Nell Fusco, who fired a slapshot past Britney Evangelista.

Evangelista kept the Huskies in the game with a 46-save performance. Marquez made 15 stops in her second collegiate start.

Bowdoin went 1-for-4 on the power play. USM was 0-for-3 with the extra skater.

The Polar Bears host UNE on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Bowdoin overwhelmed the University of Maine-Farmington in a 96-27 victory on Tuesday evening at Farmington.

The top-ranked Polar Bears remained unbeaten at 6-0. The Beavers fell to 1-6.

The Polar Bears jumped to a 9-0 lead and never looked back, leading 27-13 after one quarter and carrying a 51-18 lead into halftime thanks to a 24-5 second quarter.

Bowdoin held UMF to just two points in the third quarter and led by as many as 70 points in the fourth quarter.

Bowdoin finished at 52-percent shooting for the game and held UMF to just 25-percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers. The Polar Bears posted a staggering 39-0 advantage in points off turnovers and got 43 points off the bench.

All 14 Polar Bears who played got into the scoring column, led by 14 from Taylor Choate and 13 from Samantha Roy. Maddie Hasson added 11 points. Annie Maher had a team-high eight rebounds while Roy also recorded four assists and three steals.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Thursday evening when they travel to play at UMass Dartmouth at 7 p.m.
