FREEPORT — Caroline Smith scored 21 points to power the Freeport High School girls basketball team to a 45-24 Western Maine Conference win over Sacopee Valley on Friday.

The 1-0 Falcons, who visit Yarmouth on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., led 13-4, 21-8 and 35-15 at the quarter breaks.

Rachel Wall chipped in 10 points in the win.

Freeport, coming off a Class B South regional final appearance last season under former coach Mike Hart, struggled from the free-throw, going 4-of-14 in coach Seth Farrington’s debut.

Leavitt 30
Mt. Ararat 39

The visiting Hornets jumped out to a 9-2 lead after a quarter, but the Eagles rallied for a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference win in Topsham on Friday.

Mt. Ararat (1-0) used a 15-9 second quarter draw within 18-17 at the intermission, and jumped ahead, 27-21 after three.

Theresa Breed led the Eagles with nine points, while Abby Sirois chipped in six crucial points off the bench and added four rebounds and two steals. Grace Liedman paced Mt. Ararat with nine rebounds, Kyla Greenleaf three assists, and Ainsley Bryant and Jaden Lohr with three steals each.

Kayleigh Gilbert had eight points and seven rebounds to power Leavitt (0-1).

Mt. Ararat visits rival Brunswick on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Lisbon 41
Winthrop 43

Natalie Frost drained 11 points to lead Winthrop to an MVC victory over Lisbon Friday evening.

The Ramblers (1-0) got off to a strong start, leading 18-8 lead after the first quarter. Aaliyah WilsonFalcone chipped in nine points.

Charlee Cox scored a game-high 12 points for the Greyhounds (0-1).

Lisbon made up ground with a six-point margin in the third quarter and another two in the final frame, but came up two points short at the final buzzer.

The Greyhounds host Boothbay on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Richmond 37
Madison 48

Emily Edgerly had 20 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Bulldogs (1-0) past the Bobcats (0-1) in Richmond.

Abi Spaulding added six points and 10 rebounds, while Katie Worthen scored nine points.

Richmond was led by Hannah Moholland with 12 points and Caitlin Kendrick with 10.

The Bobcats hosts Mountain Valley on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Boys basketball

TURNER — Wyatt Hathaway went 7-of-10 from the line in overtime and garnered a game-high 31 points to lead Leavitt to a 70-65 victory over Mt. Ararat in KVAC action Friday evening.

Cole Morin produced a double-double with 20 points and 14 rebounds for the Hornets (1-0). He also hit a 3-pointer send the game to overtime. Joziah Learned added 10 points and three rebounds for Leavitt.

Jared Balser scored a team-leading 14 points, while Austin Damon chipped in with 13 points for the Eagles (0-1).

Mt. Ararat visits “Battle of the Bridge” rival Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Madison 47
Richmond 39

The visit Bulldogs held off a Bobcat rally for an MVC win on Friday at Richmond.

Madison (1-0) ld 12-8 after a quarter, 29-18 at the half and 40-26 after three.

Jacob Meader led the balanced Madison attack with 14 points, with Justyn Stinson adding 13. The Bulldogs were 8-of-13 from the line.

Danny Stewart paced Richmond (0-1) with 11 points and 16 rebounds, while Nick Adams and Mason Blake each chipped in six. The Bobcats finished 5-of-11 at the free-throw line. Black and Dakotah Gilpatric had three steals apiece.

Richmond returns to action tonight at Mountain Valley (7 p.m.).

Winthrop 74
Lisbon 34

Senior center Cameron Wood collected a double-double with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds as Winthrop cruised to an MVC victory over Lisbon on Friday.

The Ramblers (1-0) went on a 22-2 tear in the second quarter for a 33-11 halftime lead. Cameron Hachey contributed 15 points for Winthrop.

The Greyhounds played to within two points in the first quarter before Winthrop took over.

DJ Douglass scored a team-leading 19 points for Lisbon, which visits Boothbay tonight at 7 p.m.

Boys hockey

GORHAM — Jacob Doring scored a pair of goals to power Brunswick to a season-opening 6-0 victory over Windham/Westbrook at USM Arena.

Doring, assisted by Jack St. Pierre and Michael Marrow, staked the Dragons (1-0) to a 1-0 lead after period.

Marrow, Doring and Isaac Burtis added a goal each in the second frame, and St. Pierre and Michael Eno scored in the third to complete the win. St. Pierre finished with two assists, while Eno, Scout Masse and Henry Burnham added a helper each.

Spencer Marquis earned the shutout with nine saves, while Windham/Westbrook netminder Sean White turned away 23 shots.

Brunswick hosts Massabesic/Bonny Eagle/Old Orchard Beach tonight at Bowdoin College’s Sidney J. Watson Arena at 7 p.m.

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse played Poland/Gray-New Gloucester/Oak Hill/Leavitt to a stalemate on Saturday at Norway Savings Bank Arena in Auburn.

AUBURN — Noah Austin, Ian Struck and Hunter Merryman scored for the Eagles (0-0-1), and Nate Marcotte, Trent Vaillancourt and Reese Collins scored for the Kings (0-0-1).

Austin added a pair of assists for Mt. Ararat, and Cade Charron made 34 saves.

Xavier Michaud finished with 17 saves for the Kings.

Mt. Ararat/Lisbon/Morse hosts Windham/Westbrook on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
