BRUNSWICK — The top-ranked Bowdoin College women’s basketball team returned from break with a 72-49 victory over Wheaton in the opening round of the Bowdoin Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Morrell Gymnasium.

Wheaton fell to 5-5.

The Polar Bears jumped to a 12-2 lead and never trailed by less than double digits for the remainder of the game. Bowdoin scored the first 10 points of the contest, including four from Taylor Choate to take an early edge.

Bowdoin owned a 16-2 lead after one quarter and 35-13 lead at intermission. Bowdoin led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter on their way to the win.

Maddie Hasson led all players with a game-high 17 points to go with four steals for Bowdoin. Choate had 16 points, six assists and two steals, while Abby Kelly had 13 points, seven boards and five assists.

Sadie Shore led Wheaton with nine points.

On Sunday, the Polar Bears captured the title game with a 94-43 rout of Maine Maritime Academy.

The Polar Bears improved to 10-0, while the Mariners fell to 7-3. The 51-point loss was the worst for Maine Maritime since 2014.

Kelly, who finished with a game-high 19 points, was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Hasson was named as an All-Tournament selection. Alayne Felix (Maine Maritime), Mikayala Pucci (Wheaton), and Geminii Cabrera (Cedar Crest) were the other All-Tournament selections.

The Polar Bears never trailed, jumping to an 8-2 lead on the strength of 3-pointers from Kelly and Choate. The Mariners stayed within striking distance thanks to six early points from Felix as Maine Maritime trailed just 15-10 after one quarter.

Bowdoin took command in the second quarter, opening the frame on a 17-2 run to push the lead into double figures. The Polar Bears owned a 36-19 advantage at halftime and poured it on in the second half, scoring 58 points in final 20 minutes.

Hannah Graham pitched in 13 points off the bench for the Polar Bears, with Choate also in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

Bowdoin will open NESCAC play on Friday at Bates, with the tip slated for 7 p.m.

Men’s basketball

WALTHAM, Mass. — Bowdoin returned from break with an impressive 64-58 road victory at Brandeis on Sunday afternoon.

The Polar Bears improved to 7-3, while the Judges dropped to 7-3.

The Judges came out firing, taking an early 14-6 advantage following a Chandler Jones 3-pointer. Brandeis maintained the lead throughout the first half, closing the period on a 7-0 run to take a 32-23 edge into the break.

The hosts extended their lead to 11 points early in the second half before Jack Simonds took over for the Polar Bears. Simonds scored 21 of his game-high 27 points in the second half, including five 3-pointers to spark the Polar Bear comeback. A Simonds trifecta capped 10-2 run for Bowdoin, closing the gap to 46-45 with 8:15 on the clock.

Following a Brandeis layup, Simonds buried another trey to tie the game at 48 with 7:13 to go.

A 5-0 Polar Bear surge gave Bowdoin its first lead since early in the opening half, but Brandeis rallied to tie the score at 53 apiece with 3:27 on the clock.

Out of a Bowdoin timeout, Stephen Ferraro hit a layup and Jack Simonds netted another 3-pointer to make it 58-53 with two minutes to go. Bowdoin iced it with four free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.

Simonds finished with 27 points on 8-of-16 shooting from the field, including 5-of-8 from 3-point range. He also grabbed four rebounds and had two steals. Hugh O’Neil added 16 points with 14 rebounds for Bowdoin.

Brandeis was led by 16 points from Eric D’Aguanno.

Bowdoin will return to action on Friday night when the Polar Bears host Bates at 7 p.m.
