CORNVILLE — A 21-year-old man was killed Wednesday afternoon, and a second man was injured, when the snow-laden roof of a vacant and structurally unsound mobile home collapsed in this Somerset County town, officials said.
Rescue personnel removed a body at 2:05 p.m. from the collapsed structure on Route 150, also known as Beckwith Road. The scene was about a half-mile from the Skowhegan town line.
Somerset County sheriff’s deputies Cpl. Joe Jackson, Craig Dyer and Lt. Michael Knight also responded when it was learned that the collapse had injured someone fatally.
The dead man was identified as Adam Fine, 21, of Cornville. Information authorities gathered at the scene suggested that Fine was the mobile home’s owner, according to a news release from James Ross, chief deputy at the sheriff’s office.
The second man was identified as Nathan Shaw, 22, of Skowhegan. Shaw was taken to Redington-Fairview General Hospital in Skowhegan with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
The collapse was reported first at 12:57 p.m. Deputies noticed a significant snow load on the roof of the mobile home, but also noted that all interior walls had been removed. The single-wide mobile home appears to have shifted to the rear as it collapsed.
Ross said the home had been unoccupied for a number of years. It was in the process of being demolished and the timber, insulation and other materials salvaged.
Also assisting at the scene were Redington-Fairview Emergency Medical Services, as well as the Skowhegan and Madison fire departments.
Route 150 was reduced to one travel lane as firefighters dug through the rubble of the collapsed mobile home and cleared paths through deep snow. Both lanes were closed to traffic later as firefighters brought Fine’s body to a waiting hearse.
A LifeFlight helicopter also reportedly was summoned to take others with serious injuries to the hospital, but the helicopter later was turned back. There was only one other injured person.
Ross said it appears that Shaw, who had been injured, had made the emergency call after the roof collapsed.
