BRUNSWICK — The high school basketball regular season has come to a close, with the tournament field finalized on Saturday by the Maine Principals’ Association.

Several area teams made it to the postseason, with preliminary round action set to begin on Tuesday for the boys and Wednesday for the girls.

Here is a look at the field:

Boys

Three area teams kick off tournament action on Tuesday. Morse, seeded ninth, heads to Mt. Ararat at 7 p.m., while Lisbon travels to Wells, also slated for a 7 p.m. start.

Tom Maines leads his 4-14 Shipbuilders into action. Despite the record, Morse has picked up some key wins, including an upset of 15-3 Leavitt at Turner that propelled the ’Builders into the field.

Morse faces a stiff challenge at Mt. Ararat, the No. 8 seed. The Eagles slumped a bit down the stretch, dropping the last three games to finish 9-9.

Mt. Ararat defeated Morse twice this season — 55-50 on Jan. 8 and 56-55 on Jan. 19.

The Morse/Mt. Ararat winner faces top-seeded Greely (15-3) in the quarterfinals at the Portland Expo on Friday at 7:45 p.m.

Brunswick (9-9) is the No. 6 seed and jumps into quarterfinal action on Saturday at the Expo at 7 p.m. The Dragons face third-seeded Falmouth (13-5), which defeated Brunswick, 64-36, on Dec. 14.

Other quarterfinals see No. 4 Leavitt taking on No. 5 Kennebunk (14-4) on Friday at 6 p.m., while No. 7 Fryeburg Academy (7-11) meets No. 2 York (15-3) on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Lisbon draws a tough opponent in Wells in the Class B South prelims. The eighth-seeded Warriors are the defending region champions, but struggled to an 8-10 mark this year. The Greyhounds are 10-8 and seeded ninth.

The winner draws No. 1 Mountain Valley (16-2) in the quarterfinals on Saturday down at the Expo, with tip slated for 4 p.m.

Bill Ridge’s Freeport Falcons (12-6) shook off a mid-season slump and claimed the No. 6 seed in B South. The Falcons draw No. 3 Cape Elizabeth (11-7) on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Freeport fell to the Capers, 46-43, on Jan. 15.

Other B South quarters have No. 2 Maranacook (16-2) facing No. 7 Yarmouth (8-10) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m., while fourth-seeded Gray-New Gloucester (12-6) takes on No. 5 Spruce Mountain (14-4) Saturday at 2:30 p.m.

Richmond (5-13) and Wiscasset (1-17) missed out on the tournament in C South, while Pine Tree Academy (5-13), the No. 7 seed in Class D South, heads to the Augusta Civic Center next Monday at 1 p.m. to face No. 2 Temple (13-5) in the quarterfinals.

Undefeated Forest Hills (18-0) is the top seed in D South and meets No. 8 Seacoast Christian (3-15) Saturday at 1 p.m. No. 3 Valley (13-5) battles No. 6 Vinalhaven (2-14) Monday at 11:30 a.m., with Rangeley (12-6), seeded fourth, meeting up with No. 5 Greenville (8-10) Saturday at 11:30 a.m.

Girls

Richmond is the lone area team to draw a prelim contest, with the 8-10 Bobcats hitting the road on Tuesday to face No. 7 Old Orchard Beach (11-7) in a Class C South clash.

Richmond had an up and down year, dropping its first six games before rallying to win eight of the next 10.

If victorious, the Bobcats will face No. 2 Winthrop in Augusta on Feb. 19 at 11:30 a.m.

Boothbay (18-0), Winthrop (16-2). North Yarmouth Academy (14-4) and Hebron Academy (10-4) are the top four seeds and await opponents for the quarterfinals in Augusta.

In Class A South, Greely (18-0) owns the top spot with Sam Farrell’s Brunswick Dragons (17-1) second. The Rangers defeated the Dragons, 67-46 at the Expo on Dec. 28.

Brunswick faces “Battle of the Bridge” rival Mt. Ararat (8-10) on Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Expo.

Andy Morris’ team is the No. 7 seed, with many of his players experiencing the tournament atmosphere for the first time.

Other quarterfinals in A South are Greely taking on the survivor of the Leavitt (5-13) vs. Fryeburg Academy (4-14) prelim matchup Feb. 19 at 2:30 p.m. No. 3 Marshwood (14-4) meets No. 6 York (8-10) at 10 a.m., with No. 4 Kennebunk (12-6) taking on No. 5 Lincoln Academy (9-9) at 1 p.m.

In Class B South, Freeport is the No. 3 seed after a 14-4 season under first-year coach Seth Farrington. The Falcons draw No. 6 Mountain Valley (13-5) in the quarterfinals next Monday at 1 p.m. at the Expo.

Other quarters are No. 1 Gray-New Gloucester (16-2) facing either No. 8 Spruce Mountain (8-10) or No. 9 Maranacook (9-9) at 7:30 p.m.; No. 2 Oak Hill (16-2) vs. No. 7 Cape Elizabeth (8-10) at 2:30 p.m.; and No. 4 Yarmouth (12-6) vs. No. 5 Wells (12-6) at 6 p.m.

In Class D South, Pine Tree Academy heads back to the Augusta Civic Center for the quarterfinals after a 9-9 regular season. The Breakers are seeded sixth and will face No. 3 Greenville (12-6) next Monday at 8:30 a.m.

Rangeley (17-1) is the top seed and faces No. 8 Seacoast Christian (2-16) on Saturday at 10 a.m., with No. 4 Valley (9-9) and No. 5 Forest Hills (7-11) kicking off Saturday’s slate at 8:30 a.m.

Next Monday, No. 2 Temple (14-4) takes on No. 7 Vinalhaven (3-15) at 10 a.m.
