PORTLAND — The city is looking to fill 14 vacancies across seven committees, spokeswoman Jessica Grondin announced Monday.

The deadline is April 15 to apply for one seat as a fair hearing officer, the seats on the Community Development Block Grant Allocation Committee, two seats on the Land Bank Commission, and three seats on the Portland Housing Authority.

The same deadline is in place for applying for two seats on the Parks Commission, one seat on the Police Citizen Review Subcommittee, and three seats on the Public Art Committee.

Grondin said interested applicants should send a cover letter and resume to Appointments Committee Chairman in care of City Clerk, 389 Congress St., Portland 04101.

The fair hearing officer will “review any dissatisfaction stemming from any action concerning applicants for general assistance,” Grondin said, and may also be called on to attend other administrative hearings and render decisions within five days.

The seats on the CDBG Allocation Committee help determine how the city distributes Community Development Block Grants that originate from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Grant amounts are now about $2.1 million and the application process begins in the fall.

Land Bank Commission members identify and protect open spaces in the city, as well as pursue funding sources to acquire open spaces for preservation.

Members of the PHA will help oversee management of a $5.6 million budget, $14 million of housing vouchers and 12 housing developments. Grondin said the vouchers and housing serve about 6,000 city residents.

Parks Commission members are required to live in the city, and meet with Director of Parks, Recreation & Facilities Sally DeLuca to review proposals and projects, Grondin said. Members also receive public input that is forwarded to city staff.

The Police Citizen Review Subcommittee is a part of the city’s Civil Service Commission. It does not review individual internal complaint investigations, but does review the police process for the investigations while also taking public input on the police complaint process. The subcommittee also reports its results to City Manager Jon Jennings.

Public Art Committee members help administer the city’s public art collection, including gifts, placing permanent exhibits and seeking donations to care for the art collection, Grondin said.
