ALFRED – With fall comes apple season. In Alfred, on the third weekend in September, comes the Shaker Hill Apple Festival.
That is when York County Shelter Programs, Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum, the Brothers of Christian Instruction and Gile Family Farm celebrate apples, autumn and community.
The festival is YCSP’s largest annual fundraising event. This year’s event is also the kick-off of the celebration of the shelter’s 40th anniversary.
The Shaker Hill Apple Festival features about 50 juried crafters and a dozen or more vendors with jewelry, fabric arts, fine art, woodworking, handmade soaps, pottery and more. Local authors and photographers are also featured, organizers say.
The event also includes family activities – including pony rides, hay wagon rides and antique car rides.
Organizers say one of the most popular aspects of the festival is the YCSP yard sale in the Shaker Barn.
As well, he Brothers of Christian Instruction plan a garage sale to benefit a Sudan mission school and Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum hosts a yard sale on the museum property at 118 Shaker Hill Road.
There will be musicians playing throughout the event – Saturday’s tune makers include Tim Winchester, Hannah Dawber and Kevin Hornburger.
Homemade pies – yes, apple pies- will be offered by Friends of Alfred Shaker Museum, and there will be other food to enjoy while taking a museum tour.
Those who want to take home some apples can pick their own – and take a wagon ride too, at Gile’s Family Farm pick-your-own orchard on Shaker Hill.
Shaker Hill Apple Festival takes place 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday. Events are held on Shaker Hill Road, off Route 202, in York County’s shiretown.
