The City of South Portland has promoted Karl Coughlin to Director of Parks, Recreation and Waterfront.

Coughlin served as the department’s deputy director since 2017 and as interim director after Kevin Adams resigned in January to accept a similar position in Florida. Coughlin officially began as director on May 24.

He was selected from a field of 80 applicants, eight of whom were interviewed, and will receive an annual salary of $89,778.

Prior to working in South Portland, Coughlin was superintendent of parks, recreation and sanitation in York, Pennsylvania; park superintendent for Balmorhea State Park with the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department; and a supervisory recreation specialist for the Department of Defense at multiple military installations.

Coughlin resides in Windham with his family.
