Re: “Girls’ soccer: Deering freshman gets break on big stage” (Jan. 29, Page D1):

I read with great interest the article in Saturday’s Press Herald about Elsa Freeman, a Deering High School freshman soccer player who was selected to attend the U.S. Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program National Training Camp in Tampa. This sounds like a great accomplishment, as she’s the only soccer player from Maine to go, and only one of five New England girls to make it; one boy did.

How special is this? Only three Maine players in the last 10 years have made it this far. Coaches say, “She’s like a woman among girls when she plays. She just dominates the playing field.” From what I read in the article, Elsa sounds like Tobin Heath when she was a freshman at Ridge High School in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. Tobin went on to be one of the greatest women’s soccer players in history, winning World Cups and Olympic medals during her career, which still continues.

How is it that Elsa made the Southern Maine team at the end of this past fall season, but not the All-State team? Reading the article led me to believe that she must have been All-State. Regardless, I look forward to watching Elsa’s progress in coming years. It’s very exciting to have a player of her caliber playing in Maine!
