The most recent Falmouth Town Council meeting on Jan. 31 should be remembered as a perfect example of democracy in action.

The question at hand was whether or not to mandate the wearing of face masks for indoor public spaces in Falmouth. That was the question, but the meeting was about much more. The meeting proved that Falmouth residents of differing opinions and council members representing both viewpoints on a subject could still have civilized discourse, argue vigorously and yet come to a sensible conclusion.

The standout features were that the council truly appreciated the public input and the residents spoke with clarity and respect. This meeting should be the standard for all future council meetings. If you did not watch it live, take the time to see the recording on the town website. It will be 2½ hours well spent.
