Two people escaped a dangerous crash Saturday night after the driver tried to avoid hitting an animal, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said.
Wayne Allen, 28, of Harpswell, was traveling on Cundy’s Harbor Road at 10:12 p.m. when he swerved to avoid hitting an animal in the road. Allen’s vehicle careened off the road and crashed into Cranberry Horn cemetery, also known as the Oak Ledge cemetery. The Kia Sportage crashed into trees and several headstones and then rolled on the side, Capt. Donald Foss said in a news release.
The two people “were able to get out before the vehicle caught fire,” Foss said. As the two stood outside, a passing motorist stopped and called for rescue workers. The good Samaritan who helped them also shot a video of the fire. “It really is an appalling video” showing the vehicle as a complete fireball, Foss said.
The two people in the vehicle were wearing seatbelts, he said.
The Cundy’s Harbor Fire Department and EMS responded to the crash. The fire department extinguished the flames while the operator and passenger were treated at the scene.
They did not receive further medical care, Foss said.
