Margaret “Peggy” Elaine Reny

FREEPORT – It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Margaret “Peggy” Elaine Reny who passed away at the Hawthorne House on Feb. 19, 2022 following a long illness. The daughter of Donald and Lorraine (Duguay) Reny, Peggy’s final days were spent surrounded by her family, bringing her peace and comfort.

Peggy was born in Waterville on Sept. 5, 1962. She attended grade schools in Yarmouth and graduated from Yarmouth High School in 1980. Peggy was also a student of the University of Southern Maine studying to become a Social Worker.

Peg loved to have fun, liked to dance, enjoyed the ocean and spending time at the family cottage on China Lake where she would sun herself on the dock for endless hours. Spending time with family and friends brought her immense joy. A lover of gatherings, she was known for being the “life of a party” where family and friends enjoyed Peg’s good conversation, her wonderful sense of humor and contagious laugh. Sharing a glass of wine or cold beer with others, while listening to 80’s music was one of Peggy’s favorite past times.

A lover of fashion and design, Peggy enrolled into Barbizon’s Modeling School in Boston, Mass. and graduated from their modeling program. She enjoyed the latest designs and would spend time in the “Old Port” with her mother and sister visiting the various boutiques and purchasing unique articles of clothing.

Peggy was a lover of music, theater, poetry and art and often attended various concerts, shows and performances, especially those of local Maine artists and performers.

Peggy held a variety of jobs in her young adult years, however, the job that was most gratifying was being a Residential Counselor at Port Resources, Inc. in Portland where she provided support to adults with development and behavioral health challenges. In this role she discovered that her passion was to help others less fortunate than she was and thus began her path into social work. She also volunteered as a “Big Sister” for the Big Brother Big Sisters of Southern Maine, where she spent time empowering and supporting the lives of young girls in need of a trustworthy and caring mentor.

Peg leaves behind her parents, Donald and Lorraine (Duguay) Reny; her brother Steve Reny and his wife Kathleen Kerr, and her sister Kelly (Reny) Williams and her husband Roderic Williams. She also leaves behind her niece Samantha Reny and her husband Joshua McDougall, her niece Alison (Reny) Thomas and her husband Luke Thomas, her nephew Patrick Vigue and his wife Afton Vigue, her nieces Delia Williams and Madeline Kerr; her great nephews Ben Thomas and Ambrose McDougall, and her great nieces Sunny Thomas and Sawyer McDougall.

In addition to immediate family, Peg leaves behind many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends David Vigue, Laurie Sawyer and Clinton Marshall.

Throughout Peg’s illness she was taken care of by many health care professionals. We extend our deepest gratitude to all the members of the Hawthorne House in Freeport, Maine for providing exceptional care to Peggy over the past 17 years. We appreciate the special relationships she formed with Sharon, Sheila, Jenna and Taylor. The Hawthorne House was her second home and she was loved by all. We also want to thank the team from Hospice of Southern Maine for the special care Peggy received in her final days.

Although Peg will be dearly missed, we hope memories of her courageous life, determination, beautiful smile and deep love for others will bring comfort and peace to all that knew her.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. John church in Winslow, Maine at 11 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, 2022. A private spring burial will take place at the Veteran’s Cemetery in Augusta, Maine.

Arrangements are in the care of Veilleux and Redington Funeral Home, 8 Elm Street, Waterville, Maine 04901.

In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in Peggy’s honor to:
