William “Bill” Woodman

PORTLAND – William “Bill” Woodman, 85, died Feb. 12, 2022, in Portland.

A celebrated cartoonist, Bill’s work was routinely featured in The New Yorker magazine, as well as its book and Cartoon Bank collections, Playboy, The New York Times Book Review, National Lampoon, Down East Magazine, Look, American Bystander, Esquire and countless other publications. Also a supremely skilled fine artist, his plein air watercolors have exhibited in galleries along the Northeast coast. Bill’s unique wit was shaped by the perspectives of two geographies he called home: the wilds of both Maine and New York City.

He grew up in Bangor and, after serving in the US Navy from 1954 to 1957, moved to New York to pursue his career. Always self-deprecating, he never fully realized his impact as both a friend and artist, but as both is grievously missed.

He is survived by children Jowill and Anne; granddaughter Cecelia; his extended family of Joyce and Barbara, plus many friends, fellow painters and cartoonist colleagues. Bill’s charm and wit endures through the lifetime of cartoons, creations and stories he’s left behind.

Dennett, Craig & Pate Funeral Home is handling his arrangements.
