This is not a letter that is critical of Central Maine Power – or any other Maine-based electrical utility. This is a letter questioning our Public Utilities Commission and its decision-making process.

Maine’s electricity generation rate increased by more than 54 percent this year, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, cited by the website ChooseEnergy.com. This led every other state in the United States – at a time when Maine residents are already suffering from high inflation.

Maine also ranks third in the country per unit cost of every kilowatt-hour of electricity, according to Choose Energy. (We are surpassed only by Hawaii and Connecticut.)

It can’t be that costs have increased! Other states, such as Rhode Island, actually reduced their rates over the past year.

It seems fair and logical to call for a public inquiry into why and how this happened – while at the same time, the PUC is ignoring the Maine citizen’s majority vote to not allow a swath of our Maine forest to be clear cut and wired to provide Quebec energy to Massachusetts.

How can this all make sense and be beneficial to the average Maine citizen?

Do not say it’s for the environment!
