Last February, I contributed a small sum to a major-party candidate for the 2022 midterm elections here in Maine. Boy, talk about unintended consequences! Since then, I have received 10 to 20 emails per day (17 yesterday) exhorting me to contribute to other candidates of that party.

Most of these are not even from Maine – they are from states all over the country. Many of these people I’ve never even heard of.

And the tone of some of these is pretty insulting. To quote from one: “Jim, we’ve contacted you 11 times and you still haven’t responded!” Right on both counts – they have indeed sent me 11 annoying emails, and I haven’t responded. Not going to, either.

So, my advice is: Contribute to a candidate if you are so inclined – it’s a good thing. But don’t do it on the internet, send a check and make sure not to include your email address.
