Maine Water awards 15 college scholarships
As college students across the state prepare to begin the school year in a couple weeks, Maine Water is pleased to congratulate the recipients of its 2022 scholarship program. As part of Maine Water’s commitment to the local communities served, scholarships were awarded to 15 students in 15 of the towns served by Maine Water. Students who will be attending two or four year college programs in the fall were selected through their high school guidance office and awarded a grant of $500 each.
Student recipients include: Lydia Fay of Biddeford; Rebekah Ireland of Bucksport; Joshua Kohlstrom of Camden-Rockport; Brady Grogan of Freeport; Ethan Anderson of Greenville; Cameron Bains of Union-Warren; Kiley Sue Meader of Oakland; Madison Randlet of Hartland; Erin Stevenson of Rockland-Thomaston; Eleanor Jordan of Kezar Falls; Joey L. Ramsdell of Skowhegan; Samantha McGreevy of Millinocket; Carter Illingworth of Saco; and Laci Hall of Old Orchard Beach.

Former vicar lands jobs at Chevrus
Fr. Kevin Hughes, S.J., has been assigned to teach theology and assist with campus ministry at Cheverus High School in Portland, starting in the 2022-23 academic year. Fr. Hughes previously served as parochial vicar at Our Lady of Hope Parish in Portland from August 2020 to August 2021, when he was appointed parochial vicar at St. Thomas More Church in Decatur, Ga.
Fr. Kevin said he is thrilled to be back in Portland and is “really looking forward to learning and experiencing more of the city and the rest of Maine.”
A native of Cherry Hill, New Jersey, Fr. Hughes earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from La Salle University in Philadelphia and a master’s degree in biology from Saint Louis University in Missouri.
As a Jesuit in formation, Hughes taught math and science at McQuaid Jesuit High School in Rochester, New York, did a summer immersion trip with fellow Jesuit scholastics in China and earned a master of divinity degree from Regis College in Toronto. He was ordained to the priesthood in 2020 and also worked with the deaf community in the Catholic Church during his time in St. Louis, Rochester, Toronto, and in his previous stop in Maine. Fr. Hughes attended Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., to study ASL.
