I would like to comment on a recent Maine Voices column (“Maine Voices: Make America a beacon of hope again,” Oct 26) pertaining to the midterm elections.
I have an aversion to the word “again” concerning the United States. True, the United States has tarnished and lost some of its world glory and image, but it is still a destination of preference for a better life compared to other nations. Its economy definitely needs to get off the globalization bandwagon, where possible, and become economically self-sufficient but remain internationally economically active.
The European Union continues to grow into a tighter, cooperative union of nations, into a sometimes talked about “United States of Europe.” Russia and China have become bold enough to test the United States, wanting to replace America’s still-formidable global leadership. Russia and China know that if they push too hard – may that never occur – the United States will push back. Then it will become a world of mess for all concerned, no matter where they live on Earth.
