I’ve always been an avid reader, at times knocking out a book a day. Among everything I’ve read, widespread genres, one book has hung on for decade after decade, ever ready to slide into my consciousness. It’s the most terrifying book I’ve ever read: “1984.”

In the aftermath of our State of the Union address, my favorite outrage shot over the issue of Social Security “sunsetting” was from Utah Sen. Mike Lee, who once said on tape: “I’m here right now to tell you one thing you probably have never heard from a politician: It will be my objective to phase out Social Security, to pull it up from the roots and get rid of it.”

Since the SotU aired, I read Florida Sen. Rick Scott’s Plan To Rescue America. It should be a must-read for all Americans. I’ll tell you upfront that it is far more sinister and frightening than “1984.”

As I read it, all I could envision was a psycho at a keyboard with an LSD drip in place. It’s a terrifying look – from a Republican senator, a former governor – at the move toward autocracy by the Republican Party, designed to dominate and control every aspect of our lives.

Our democracy is far from being out of the woods.
