The ambition to provide paid family leave up to 12 weeks is noble – for those deserving of it (“Maine could become 12th state to enact paid family leave,” Feb. 6).

My worry is this will be abused by folks who would rather not work and continue to receive a weekly paycheck. Most of the cost will be borne by the employer; moreover, the employer cannot hire a replacement because that position must be available when the 12 weeks are over.

We need to take a closer look at this before proceeding.
