Re: Kevin Benjamin’s recent letter (“Letter to the editor: ‘1984’ analogy better applied to Democrats,” Feb. 14):

No, it applies more to Republicans, especially when it comes to George Orwell’s cardinal principle: truth.

Republicans of all stripes make up stuff to suit their political purposes these days. It’s like Orwell said: “Political language … is designed to make lies sound truthful and murder respectable, and to give an appearance of solidity to pure wind.”

Most people who call things “Orwellian” don’t know anything about Orwell. They’re just making things up, which must be fun because so many people are doing it. House Speaker Kevin McCarthy won’t get rid of Rep. George Santos, who makes up a new lie or two every day, because – as Orwell told us – it’s all about power.
