Cell phone users will receive an emergency alert test on their phones Wednesday afternoon.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency, in conjunction with the Federal Communications Commission, is expected to conduct a national emergency alert test starting at around 2:20 p.m.
The WEA, or wireless emergency alert test, will last about 30 minutes. Cell phones should vibrate and emit a distinct tone with a message notifying you that the government is conducting a test of the national emergency alert system. Radio and TV stations will also receive a test alert Wednesday.
The Maine Emergency Management Agency said in a Facebook post that the test is conducted at least once every three years and requires no action on the public’s part.
The purpose of the test is to ensure that the systems continue to be an effective means of warning the public about national emergencies. If the test needs to be postponed because of bad weather, it will be conducted on Oct. 11.
