A homeless man was hospitalized Monday night after his tent caught fire in Westbrook.
The man suffered inhalation burns and was taken to Maine Medical Center. He was in stable condition Tuesday evening, according to Westbrook fire Chief Stephen Sloan. He did not identify the victim.
Firefighters were called to a homeless encampment in a wooded area off Spring Street late Monday night. Firefighters paused before approaching the blaze when they heard firearm ammunition going off in the tent.
A Westbrook police officer counted 17 rounds fired – the same number as were in the firearm’s magazine, according to the victim. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating.
Sloan said the tent was part of a larger encampment spread out through the Spring Street area.
