I read with interest Rep. Sally Cluchey’s recent column (Sept. 24). She expresses her disappointment for a lack of recognition of bipartisan accomplishments during the last legislative session. Bipartisanship is undoubtedly something to celebrate, but it’s equally important to scrutinize the actions behind the words. As a constituent, I wish to focus on some inconsistencies that have not escaped my attention.

Rep. Cluchey underscored her dedication to bipartisanship. Yet, her voting record is a different narrative. It’s noteworthy that Cluchey has consistently voted with her party, contributing to the one-party rule in Augusta. Words of cooperation are encouraging, but true bipartisanship requires more than lip service – it demands consistent commitment to working across the aisle.

One especially concerning issue was her vote to repeal a law that assisted over 200,000 seniors with high property taxes. Senior advocacy groups hailed this legislation as it dramatically improved the lives of elderly Mainers. Rep. Cluchey chose to side with her party leadership, leaving our seniors to bear the consequences.

Another point worth considering is the representative’s support for an entitlement program that will cost Maine businesses and workers nearly $350 million annually. Significant tax hikes burden small businesses and hamper their ability to grow, invest and create job opportunities.

I would much rather see Rep. Cluchey walk the walk and support us back at home, not the Democratic Party only.
