I’m writing to thank you for your coverage of the ownership controversy on Maine beaches and to express my hope that elected officials can do better to reestablish the public’s right to enjoy our beaches. The coastline of Maine is one of our greatest shared resources. We must do more to maintain Maine beaches as relaxing spaces for all.

Given all the “No Trespassing” and “Private Beach” signs, it was utterly surprising to me to learn that oceanfront property owners on Moody Beach do not pay taxes on the land to the low-tide mark. When property owners who are not paying taxes on the beach feel free to erect makeshift “fences” in the sand to warn beach goers not to venture beyond the narrow public way, confront children building sandcastles and generally create a quarrelsome environment, it’s a wake-up call for all of us.

If the sand from the seawall to the low-tide mark continues to be tax-free, then local leaders and state officials should be able to work out an agreement that allows folks who have come to expect a quiet, relaxing day at the beach to be able to enjoy one.
