Gov. LePage took to the Maine Sunday Telegram’s Opinion page last week to blast House Speaker Sara Gideon’s legislative leadership. All of Augusta’s ills he blames on Speaker Gideon, reserving no responsibility for himself and his party.

Yet a critical sentence in the governor’s attack is revealing. Gov. LePage wrote: “Speaker Gideon would rather throw the elderly out on the street and hike taxes on hardworking Mainers than give a Republican-backed bill a win.”

This sentence encapsulates everything that is wrong with our state’s political climate under LePage. Every thorny issue that comes before him is cast in terms of whether he, and not we, will win or lose. We need to elect a government in Augusta that focuses on wins for the state of Maine, not for its governor or his/her party.
