PORTLAND — Steve Hewins, who has directed the nonprofit Portland’s Downtown District for two years, will step down at the end of June.

“I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time with PDD, especially working with all the people and organizations that make Portland what it is today,” Hewins said in a press release Monday.

Hewins became head of PDD after more than 30 years in the travel business. In his tenure, the Old Port Festival was expanded to a three-day event, and PDD worked with Creative Portland to close Congress Street to vehicle traffic during First Friday Art Walks.

PDD board Chairman Michael Mastronardi said the search for a new executive director has started, with applications being accepted through May 15.
