Somehow, we have lost Cumberland’s connection to the sea. What public property we did have along our shore became private and exclusive. When we think of Cumberland, we think of fields and farms, woodlands and open space. Cumberland needs to re-establish waterfront access for all.
The Payson property is beautiful, a “gem” along the Foreside. Clearly it has some limitations. The report presented by the Chebeague and Cumberland Land Trust shows this property is very workable. It is a good, sound investment for the people of Cumberland. Town councilors can establish a responsible and balanced use of this site and be mindful of the economic impacts. If the voters do not purchase this section of the Payson property, then it will forever remain an exclusive and private area, just like all the other land along Cumberland’s shoreline. Let’s not miss the boat on this one. Please vote to acquire the Payson property.
