SCARBOROUGH – Members of Scarborough Kiwanis Club recently delivered food to Wentworth Intermediate School, as part of a project to fill 119 backpacks for kids in need.
“This is our second year of filling backpacks,” said district chairwoman Ava Adams. “No child deserves to go to bed hungry. Only 17 states have a higher rate of food insecurity in the U.S. than Maine, and Maine has the highest rate in New England.”
Adams added, “One in five children goes to bed hungry in Maine every day and we want to help these families.”
Each of the backpacks contained staples like canned goods, peanut butter and cereal. Kiwanis members Jackie Perry, Pat Cornea, Ava Adams and Sherry Forest, club president collected donations of food from club members in order to fill the backpacks.
