PORTLAND — Volunteers are needed to make 300 insulating window inserts at the Window Dressers Community Workshop.

Workshops begin Wednesday, Sept. 19, at the Maine Irish Heritage Center, 34 Gray St., and continue daily through Sept. 26. Workshop hours are 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. and 1-5 p.m., with lunch served from 12:30-1 p.m.

The workshops are sponsored by the West End Neighborhood Association and the Portland Climate Action Team.

Local coordinator Elissa Armstrong said the inserts could save 34 tons of carbon dioxide from getting into the atmosphere annually while also saving thousands of dollars in energy costs.

Window Dressers is a statewide nonprofit with 30 local chapters. Twenty percent of all inserts made are given to low-income residents at no cost. January 2019 workshops will be held at Southern Maine Community College and Allagash Brewing.
