Special thanks to the Bath Farmer’s Market

This the season of giving, and I wanted to take a moment to thank the Bath Farmer’s Market as well as all of their patrons for their generosity at the Market the Saturday before Thanksgiving. The children of Georgetown Central School have made it a tradition to go to the market with the hope of collecting vegetables for Thanksgiving Baskets. This year, we collected enough to fill 37 baskets for our local and area families. We also collected over $600 from patrons, and due to these donations, we were able fill these baskets to the brim! We truly appreciate everyone’s support with this project. We are very lucky to be a part of this wonderful loving community!

Using the marketplace to reverse climate change

We are all aware of the recent climate reports from independent scientists and most recently from our government’s National Climate Assessment released the day after Thanksgiving. These reports are full of the dire consequences to the planet due to increased carbon in the atmosphere.

Here in Maine we feel the effects of climate change in more frequent storms, some resulting in huge tree loss. Local farmers worry about the effect of the weather on their crops and our fishermen worry about the movement of fish as the ocean warms.

Climate reports always seem like more of the same. But there is good news coming from Congress. Last week a bill– The Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act, focused on reducing carbon in the atmosphere — was introduced into the House by six Congressmen — three Republicans and 3 Democrats. This is an old-fashioned bipartisan approach and moves past the divisive, political argument.  I won’t describe the mechanisms the bill sets up since a simple computer search will bring complete details.  But it’s important to say that the plan is market based and returns the monies collected to families.

What can we do to help this new bill become a reality?  We can write to our members of Congress and urge them to support this bipartisan legislation.  Sen. Collins, Sen. King and Rep. Pingree each have a web site which provides a quick and easy way to ask them to support this crucial piece of legislation.  Let’s flood their offices with letters and emails asking for support of this bill.
