BRUNSWICK

Former Town Councilor Jackie Sartoris today announced she will run to represent Brunswick in the 2014 Democratic primary to succeed state Rep. Charles Priest, D-Brunswick.

Priest has served four terms in the House and cannot seek re-election in 2014.

Sartoris joins Ralph Tucker, a former judge, in seeking the Democratic nomination thus far. No Republican has yet announced for the seat.

“I’m very excited about the opportunity to represent Brunswick, this time in Augusta,” Sartoris said in a news release announcing her candidacy.

Sartoris pointed to her experience at the state and local levels as reasons she is running for what is now House District 63. The district will become House District 50 after redistricting has taken effect.

Sartoris served on the Brunswick Town Council representing District 2 from 2001 to 2008.

As a councilor, Sartoris served on the startup group that became the Teen Center Board of Directors, Comprehensive Plan Committee and Appointments

Committee, and she led the Mere Point Boat Launch Citizens Advisory Committee.

As vice chairman of the Brunswick Democratic Town Committee, Sartoris created the committee’s annual nonpartisan Martin Luther King Day pasta supper fundraiser, all proceeds from which support Brunswick’s MidCoast Hunger Prevention Program.

Sartoris is an attorney in Brunswick specializing in elder law. She is married to Steve Walker and has two children.

Tucker, 66, is almost a year into his retirement from Wiscasset District Court.

Tucker and Priest have been friends for more than 40 years; Tucker was best man at Priest’s wedding.

Tucker describes himself as “a good Democrat.”

“I’ve seen how all of those things intersect, sometimes badly, from the bench,” he said.

Tucker announced his candidacy in July and had raised a little more than $1,100 at that time.
