City assessor Paul Mateosian was recently named the 2013 Assessor of the Year by the Maine Association of Assessing Officers at the MAAO’s annual conference.

The criteria for the award included: Hold the title of assessor for his/her municipality, and be a current CMA; service and contribution beyond just that of the municipality in which he/she serves by active participation in various assessing organizations; quality and consistency of work product; recognized as an assessor who displays characteristics of integrity and leadership; and at least three years experience as an assessor.

After serving as deputy assessor in Waterville for four years, Mateosian joined Bath as assessor on June 6, 1994. In addition to his responsibilities as the city’s assessor, he is also the city’s IT manager, Bath Community Television manager and assistant city manager, and has served in several acting capacities as city manager, finance director and treasurer.

Mateosian stayed ahead of the curve with advancing technologies in the field by creating a website interface for the city, before commercial assessing and geographic information system software companies offered this feature, and was appointed to Maine Library of Geographic Information Board by the state Senate in 2002 in an effort to centralize Maine’s GIS mapping information. He also served on the Governor’s Advisory Council, representing Bath in the statewide Brunswick Naval Air Station redevelopment effort.

The Maine Association of Assessing Officers is a nonpolitical and nonpartisan organization promoting the responsible and equitable assessment of real and personal property for the purposes of ad valorem municipal taxation. The focus of the MAAO is the exchange of education, ideals and information through the united efforts and cooperation of its membership.
