Richard was born in 1928, one of five children to Paul and Edith Eaton Gilmore. A graduate of Morse High School class of 1946, “Lefty” was a standout baseball pitcher. After high school he served several years in the Army doing a tour in Japan.
Upon returning home, he eventually opened Gilmore’s Seafood on Front Street in Bath and operated it until he turned it over to his sons in the mid-1980s. He would go on to work part-time fishing, building banjos with Jimmy Cox and working on his hobbies growing his vegetables, braiding rugs, camping and fishing. He loved being on the water and owned several fishing boats throughout his life.
He is survived by his three children, Ben Gilmore and wife Betty of Woolwich, Kevin Gilmore of Bath and Suzi Ater and husband John of Bath, two stepdaughters, Christine Coombs and Ellie Rommel, a sister, Janice Dannals of Salem, NH; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Richard was a kind, gentle man who loved a good fish lie and a gut laugh. He also especially loved his girls cooking, going for rides anywhere and “short” visits from company! He will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved him.
Visiting house will be held on Friday, March 20, 2015, at the David E. Desmond & Son Funeral Home, 638 High St., Bath, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with a service immediately following at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bath Area Food Bank, 150 Congress Ave., Bath, ME.
