BIDDEFORD (AP) — The Biddeford City Council has voted to move forward with safety improvements at the city-owned airport, ending a six-year stalemate over the fate of the property.
The Portland Press Herald reports that while the council Tuesday supported accepting federal and state funding to pay for the majority of the work, it rejected a proposal to spend $27,000 to study the facility’s economic impact.
Biddeford Municipal Airport has long been a source of contention. In 2008, voters rejected a proposal to close it. The Federal Aviation Administration has put the city on notice that it must address safety issues, including trees near the runway.
Supporters say the airport supports economic development in the region. Opponents raise concerns about the airport’s location near neighborhoods and conditions that come with federal money.
