AUGUSTA (AP) — Both contestants in Maine’s 2nd District congressional race are now airing TV ads.

Democratic incumbent Rep. Mike Michaud began airing ads Tuesday in the Bangor, Portland and Presque Isle markets, focusing on his record in Congress.

Republican candidate Kevin Raye, the Maine Senate president, started airing 30- second spots last week in the three Maine markets focusing on his work in Augusta and previously as a top aide for U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe.

Maine Today Media says the Michaud ads are running two weeks earlier than indicated by public records from TV stations, suggesting a tough race ahead.

Michaud and Raye first faced each other for the 2nd District House seat in 2002.
