The Portland Food Co-op has taken a great, progressive step in announcing that the storefront it will open in September at 290 Congress St. will be easily accessible by people who, by choice or circumstance, are not car-dependent (“Portland Food Co-op takes step toward full-service store,” Jan. 7).
Unlike the Winter Farmers’ Market, whose East Bayside location is not served by a single Metro line, the co-op is easily reached seven days a week on the No. 1 bus, and by several other routes on weekdays and Saturdays.
The co-op’s organizers deserve praise for recognizing that everyone deserves access to good-quality, affordable, local, organic and natural foods – whether they drive or not.
