Pat Geary scored the game’s lone goal to return the Bowdoin College men’s ice hockey team to the win column with a 1-0 victory at the University of Southern Maine on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears climbed to 3-5 on the year, while dropping the Huskies to 1-8-3.
Geary tallied the only goal at 14:02 of the opening period. He cleaned up his own rebound to put the Polar Bears ahead, with his initial shot being set up by Spencer Antunez and Jack Bliss.
Alex Zafonte posted his second shutout of the season with 23 stops, including 13 in the final frame.
Bowdoin held a 27-23 edge in shots. Both teams went 0- for-2 on the power play.
Anthony D’Aloisio turned away 26 shots for the Huskies before being pulled in the final 1:15 in favor of an extra skater.
The Polar Bears host Tufts on Friday evening beginning at 7 p.m.
Men’s basketball
Saint Joseph’s used red hot shooting and strong defense to knock off Bowdoin, 77-58 at Morrell Gymnasium.
The Monks improved to 3- 3, while the Polar Bears fell to 6-2 with their second straight setback.
The teams traded blows in the first half, with the Monks holding a slim 34-31 edge at the break thanks to 11 first-half points from Darian Berry.
Saint Joseph’s took command immediately out of the gate in the second half, scoring the first 13 points of the period to take a 47-31 lead five minutes into the half. The Monks pushed their lead to 18 points before Bowdoin mounted a rally, sparked by a pair of Liam Farley 3-pointers, that cut the lead to nine points, 52-43, with 11:30 to go.
Saint Joseph’s responded, using a 9-2 run to quickly push the lead back to double figures. Ian Mileikis sparked the second-half surge by the Monks, scoring 16 points in the final 20 minutes as Saint Joseph’s pushed the lead to as many as 20 points.
The Monks connected on 50-percent of their shots, including 10-of-21 from 3- point range. Bowdoin made just 4-of-15 from behind the arc.
Mileikis scored a game-high 25 points for the Monks, while Berry had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Bowdoin was led by 19 points from Jack Simonds, while Hugh O’Neil added 14. Liam Farley scored 10 for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin will return to action with a home game against Bates on Thurs- day evening at 7 p.m.
Women’s hockey
Bowdoin picked up its first shutout of the season in a 3-0 win over visiting University of Southern Maine inside Sidney J. Watson Arena.
The Polar Bears extended their unbeaten streak and improved to 4-0-1. The Huskies fell to 3-7.
Bowdoin opened the scoring with a tally 6:40 into the game. With the puck in the crease and Britney Evangelista unable to cover it, Tala Glass poked home the first goal.
Late in the second period, Jill Rathke intercepted a breakout pass by the Huskies in neutral territory and found Marissa Fichter, who handled through the defense and crossed into the USM zone, skating to the low side of the right faceoff circle. Fichter wristed an uncontested shot nearside top shelf.
With one minute remaining in the period, Jess Cloutier pulled the puck off the left boards and skated to center. The sophomore directed a shot towards the far post to put Bowdoin up 3- 0.
Evangelista made 41 saves in 60 minutes of action for the Huskies. Sophia Lattanzio stopped six shots for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin hosts Johnson & Wales on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m.
Women’s squash
Bowdoin split a pair of matches in upstate New York this past weekend.
The 24th-ranked Polar Bears stand at 2-2 this season after falling to 26thranked Hamilton, 6-3, and defeating Colgate, 8-1.
Bowdoin won at the top three positions against Hamilton, earning 3-0 sweeps thanks to Lindsey Bindra, Tully Ross and Lex Horwitz.
The Polar Bears handled Colgate with relative ease, earning 3-0 wins at the top seven positions and getting a 3-1 victory from Jeannie Davis at No. 8. Bindra, Ross, Horwitz, Zoe Wood, Natasha Belsky, Mariela Mendoza and Caroline Burkhart accounted for the other Bowdoin points in the victory.
The Polar Bears will finish up their first semester schedule with a pair of matches at MIT on Saturday against Wellesley (noon) and Boston College (1:30 p.m.).
Men’s squash
Bowdoin lost a pair of tight matches last weekend on the road at Hamilton College.
The 27th-ranked Polar Bears fell to 1-3 this season after falling to 29th-ranked Hamilton, 6-3, and 26thranked Hobart, 5-4.
Uday Kahnna and Drew Clark each won two matches over the weekend, collecting victories against Hamilton and Hobart at the sixth and seventh positions, respectively. George Cooley (3-0) also earned a win in the loss to Hamilton.
Tyler Shonrock (3-2) and Arjun Dravid (3-1) accounted for Bowdoin’s other points in the setback to Hobart.
The Polar Bears will close out the first semester on Saturday at MIT on Saturday at noon.
Swimmer of the Week
Bowdoin junior Daniel Williams has been named the New England Small College Athletic Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Performer of the Week.
At the Maine State Meet hosted in Greason Pool last weekend, Williams broke his own school record in the 1,650 freestyle by clocking a time of 15:58.16, touching the wall nearly one minute ahead of the next finisher at the Maine State Championships.
Williams also won the 500 freestyle with a time of 4:41.79.
Williams and the Polar Bears are off until 2018, returning to Greason Pool on Jan. 19 for a dual meet against Bates.
