Topsham — Local photographer John Bald will deliver a slide presentation and talk on Thursday, Nov. 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. for First Light Camera Club in Topsham. The topic of discussion is “Street Photography Tips” and the event is open to the public. The Club meets at the Topsham Medical Building, 4 Horton Place in Topsham. Attendance is free for members of FLCC and $10 for others.

John Bald has been photographing since he was 12. Over many years, he focused on landscapes, seascapes and the natural environment, but became newly enthused when he discovered street photography about three years ago. Now, street photography has become a prominent part of his practice.

His talk for First Light Camera Club will emphasis some of the tips and tricks he has developed. While he enjoys photographing in the streets of Portland or Lewiston, for example, he finds that the same principles apply whether you are shooting in a field or on a beach. He travels to New York three times per year to photograph the City and particularly enjoys photographing different ethnic neighborhoods.

Bald recently took a four-day workshop with photographer Harvey Stein who has been photographing New York City and its surroundings since the ’70s.

Stein was an excellent teacher who, according to John Bald, “pushed his students to make portraits.” Part of his presentation will be about skills he learned from that experience.

Bald shoots with an Olympus OM-D E-M5 Micro Four Thirds camera with both 12-40mm and 24-80mm lenses. He also uses a smaller, lighter Ricoh GR with a 28mm lens which he swears by.

Bald posts his photos at www.johnbald.net, and on Flickr and Instagram. He also follows others street photographers, and will bring samples of work that inspires him to the November 30th meeting.

First Light Camera Club hosts tech nights, field trips, and talks throughout the year and always welcomes new members. Upcoming guest speakers include: “Painterly Photographs” with Kathleen Clemons on Dec. 14 and “Coast Guard Ship Photography” with Doug van Kampen on Jan. 18, 2018. The Club will host an evening of photographing Christmas lights downtown (Dec. 7) and tech nights about “Lightroom Basics” and “One on One Image Critiques.” To learn more, visit www.firstlightcc.com; email: info@firstlightcc.com; or call (207) 729-6607.
