LISBON’S SYDNEY PLOURDE RACES to the goal in Wednesday’s high school field game against Boothbay. The Seahawks defeated Lisbon, 6-0, dropping the Greyhounds to 1-4.
Kara Finnerty gave the Bowdoin College field hockey team its first win of the season with a breakaway overtime goal against Bates in a 1-0 final on Wednesday evening.
The Polar Bears climbed to 1-1 (1-1 NESCAC) after falling to Amherst in their season opener. The Bobcats (0-3, 0-2 NESCAC) controlled the game in regulation but remained winless.
Bowdoin’s most promising scoring opportunity in regulation came on a long feed to Abby Bashaw charging into the circle. Bates’ Adelae Durand came out and broke up the play before the Polar Bears could convert.
During overtime, the two teams traded pressure through the opening minutes. Elizabeth Bennewitz thwarted a 2-on-1 down the right side by intercepting the centering pass from the end line and clearing it out of Bowdoin’s circle.
Finnerty scored the game’s lone goal 8:03 into overtime. From midfield, Bennewitz fed Finnerty in Bates territory and the sophomore navigated around a defender for a breakaway. Durand dove to take away the angle and smother the shot, but Finnerty pulled the ball back and slid a shot inside the far right corner.
Durand ended the day with one save, while Maddie Ferrucci earned her first collegiate shutout behind a four -save performance.
Bates earned seven penalty corners in the contest. Bowdoin did not execute a single corner. The Bobcats outshot the Polar Bears by a 15-4 margin.

DIXFIELD — Max Sampson’s third goal with 5.6-seconds remaining in the second overtime lifted Wiscasset to a 4-3 Mountain Valley Conference win over Dirigo.
The Wolverines earned their first win (1-3) and will visit Lisbon on Friday at 4 p.m. The Cougars fell to 0-4.
Down 2-1 at the half, Wiscasset rallied with two straight second-half goals behind Sampson.
Dirigo tied the game when Mateo Lapointe was credited with a Wiscasset own goal.
As time ticked down in the second overtime, Sampson stole a Dirigo clear, dribbled toward the Cougars goal and launched a shot into the upper right corner of the cage to give the visitors the win.
Matt Chapman scored a goal for the Wolverines.

The Greyhounds won their home opener as Noah Austin scored the winner with two minutes remaining in regulation against Winthrop.
Lisbon, 3-0-1, received two goals from Cam Poisson, while DJ Douglass assisted Austin on the game winner. Steve Martin also picked up a helper for Lisbon.
Jonah Sautter turned away three shots in the Lisbon cage, while Ben Boulet had four stops for Winthrop (1-1-1).
Rowan Goebel-Bain gave Winthrop a 2-1 halftime lead with a pair of goals.

The Falcons pulled away with three second-half goals en route to a Western Maine Conference win over Fryeburg Academy.
Freeport improved to 2-2 and visits North Yarmouth Academy on Tuesday at 4 p.m. This will be the Falcons’ fifth straight road game to begin the season before hosting York on Sept. 21.
Owen Patrick broke a scoreless tie five minutes before halftime, then Freeport received goals from Shea Wagner and Gabe Wagner in the second frame.
Cullen Pietrantonio had 15 saves for the Raiders (1-3).

The visiting Hornets left McMann Field with a KVAC victory over the Shipbuilders on Tuesday.
Morse (0-4-1) goaltender Miles Bobbe had 12 saves.
Leavitt was credited for the lone goal in the second half when the ball deflected in off a defender.
“I thought we had an outstanding team effort,” said Morse coach Chuck Reece, whose Shipbuilders visit Oceanside on Friday at 3:30 p.m.
