PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. – A 4-year-old dog that uses a wheelchair has become the first handicapped dog to climb Mount Washington.
Lucy, a mixed breed whose back legs were crushed in an accident, made the 7.6-mile trip up the peak’s auto road Wednesday, accompanied by owner Courtney Dunning of Peterborough. Ryan Triffitt, marketing director for Mount Washington, says it’s the first time a handicapped dog has reached the top — or even attempted to.
The New Hampshire Union Leader reports that the 28-year-old Dunning, a nurse at Concord Hospital, says her little black dog, is a go-getter who will try anything.
