BOSTON — The region’s beleaguered fishermen are trying to grab President Obama’s attention while he vacations on Martha’s Vineyard.
The Northeast Seafood Coalition took out an ad in a local paper Tuesday, with the headline “Mr. President, We Need Your Help.”
Gloucester fisherman Russell Sherman says in the ad that his decades-old business can’t survive new, low catch limits. He says efforts to work with the Department of Commerce have “fallen on deaf ears,” and asks Obama to direct it to “work with us.”
On Thursday, fishing vessels from around the region plan to gather off Vineyard Haven to protest federal policies they say are pushing fishermen to insolvency.
They’re also angry with the federal fisheries law enforcement agency, which is rife with mismanagement, according to a recent audit.
