NORTH YARMOUTH — Jim Moulton defeated Keith Thompson, 387-270, in a special election Monday to fill a vacancy on the Board of Selectmen.
Moulton will complete the final year of Clark Whittier’s term. Whittier resigned June 30.
Moulton was most recently elected to the School Administrative District 51 Board of Directors in 2012 and served a term that expired in June. He previously served on the School Board from 2002 to 2005, and spent 12 years on the Board of Selectmen, most recently from 2005 to 2008.
Moulton, who has lived in town for 63 years, has also served six years on the Cumberland County Budget Advisory Committee and several years on the town Zoning Board of Appeals
The Mill Road resident is opposed to a November referendum for the proposed redevelopment of North Yarmouth Memorial School as a municipal and community campus, the sale of the existing Town Hall, and construction of a municipal sewer system.
Instead, he supports a competing referendum, which in part calls for requests for proposals on redevelopment of the school property.
Moulton said he was pleased by Monday’s voter turnout and is hoping for a “common sense” resolution of the village center debate. “I’m open and willing to listen to anybody’s ideas,” he said.
Thompson, a retired aviator and Bryn Lane resident who chairs the Spring Point Ledge Light Trust in South Portland, was narrowly defeated by Selectman Jeanne Chadbourne in the June election.
In an email Tuesday morning, Thompson congratulated Moulton on a successful campaign, adding that he has “no further plans to run at this time.”
Also on Monday’s special election ballot was a Budget Committee seat expiring in June 2018. No one submitted nomination papers to get on the ballot, but Andy Walsh received the most write-in votes – 10 – and will be asked by the town to serve. Should he not wish to do so, Linc Merrill (who received seven votes) or Clark Whittier (who got six) could also be asked to serve.
