If 2nd Amendment absolutists believe their right to possess and use an AR is sacrosanct, surely they would be willing to pay the cost of that in money and apology.

Letter to the editor: Lewiston offers lessons in love, acceptance
It’s too late to make a difference in the lives of those who were killed in Lewiston but it’s not too late to make a difference in the lives of those of us still here.
Letter to the editor: Casualties in Gaza could have been avoided
The primary objective of Israel’s war in Gaza is the destruction of Hamas. It appears that little thought has been given on how this should be achieved and what the next steps should be if Hamas leadership is removed. Israel didn’t have much choice in its initial response to the events of Oct. 7, the […]
Letter to the editor: Inaction on gun control is itself a crime
I am writing this in response to an angry, insult-laden letter regarding calls for change in gun control laws (“I do not believe guns are the problem,” Nov. 5). The argument that it’s “sick, evil people” and not access to specific guns that are the problem, is a tired and weak argument. There will always […]
Letter to the editor: Maine Mall is the answer to PWM parking crunch
Most Maine Mall parking lots sit empty as the anchor stores struggle to stay put. Meanwhile, demand for jetport parking is at an all-time high.
Letter to the editor: I need more from the mayor of Portland
I didn’t vote for a new mayor of Portland; none were qualified as far as I am concerned. I need a mayor who would see to it that our public schools get up to snuff and teach kids to read, write and count as good as any Catholic school does. And a mayor who would […]
Letter to the editor: Gun safety laws are in no way conspiratorial
This country is broken. Gun safety laws are not a conspiracy to make gun owners less free. Banning assault-style, semi-automatic weapons does not restrict the freedom to hunt. Banning high-capacity magazines does not restrict the freedom to own or operate a firearm. Banning after-market trigger upgrades does not restrict the freedom to fire a gun. […]
Letter to the editor: Make possession of assault weapons illegal
If it isn’t time now, when will it be? On Oct. 25, Maine joined many other states whose citizens have felt the trauma and disruption of mass shootings. Do you feel that pain? Let’s do something today. Let’s make the possession of assault weapons in Maine illegal. That’s the tool that can kill the most […]
Letter to the editor: Response to Lewiston shootings is deeply disappointing
I am deeply disappointed (although not surprised) by the weak response of Gov. Janet Mills to the tragic and horrifying mass shooting in Lewiston. The worst mass murder in the state’s history, committed by a mentally ill man with legally obtained weapons of war, and the governor’s response is to waffle, bristle at tough questions […]
Letter to the editor: What we have learned from Lewiston
Lessons from Lewiston: • Every assault rifle is a weapon of mass destruction. They are designed to maximize death and are used that way. • Now that we have experienced sheltering in place while an active shooter is roaming among us, let us remember Ukraine and the ruthless man pushing to take innocent lives. It […]
