The owner of the Travelodge motel on Brighton Avenue wants to tear down the structure and build a new motel.

Kamlesh Patel has applied for city approval of his plan, which he said is contingent on getting permits and financing. The timeline is also contingent on those factors, Patel said, adding that it’s unlikely the demolition and construction could be completed before the end of the summer.

Patel said the 120-room motel currently on the site is getting old and that’s driving his desire to rebuild. He said he wants to build a new motel that would have about 85 rooms and is unsure of its affiliation with a national chain.

The site is on Brighton Avenue near an overpass that crosses the Maine Turnpike.

Patel said he and three partners have owned the motel since 2004 and they also own the land where the adjacent Denny’s is located. That land is leased to the restaurant, he said, and there are no current plans to make any changes to that property.

A public meeting on the plan is scheduled next week in the Travelodge main office at 1210 Brighton Ave.
