The Portland Water District on Sunday responded to water main breaks in two greater Portland communities, one of which police say could take all of Monday to fix.

Sgt. Anthony Ciampi said a water main break on Stroudwater Street in Westbrook, between Westbrook High School and Westbrook Middle School, could cause some traffic headaches for commuters on Monday morning.

Stroudwater Street will either be closed to traffic or reduced to one lane beginning at 8 a.m. to give crews from the water district the time they need to repair the break. Ciampi said police don’t expect the road to reopen until 4 p.m. The Stroudwater Street water main break was reported around 10:30 a.m. Sunday, but the district decided to keep the street open and return on Monday.

Michelle Clements, a spokeswoman for the water district, said crews are working to repair a second water main break on Plymouth Street in South Portland. Plymouth Street, between Anchor Road and Cooper Street, was closed around 5 p.m. Sunday and was expected to reopen around 10:30 p.m.
