Martin Le-May, of Essex, England, captured an extraordinary image while out walking with his wife, according to a report on BBCNews.com.
The amateur photographer told BBC News: “I heard a distressed squawking noise and feared the worst.”
What he saw was a weasel riding on the back of a green woodpecker as it flew through the air.
The photograph was taken Monday at Hornchurch Country Park in east London.
BBC News interviewed wildlife expert Lucy Cooke about the photograph. Cooke said “a female weasel weighs less than a Mars Bar but is as ferocious as a lion.”
News of the weasel’s ride made it to “Today,” “Good Morning America” and “BuzzFeed” and earned #WeaselPecker status on Twitter.
