TOPSHAM — Topsham’s American Legion post is being renamed in honor of a local soldier killed in Afghanistan.

Post 202 is also celebrating its 50th anniversary with the rededication ceremony scheduled for Saturday afternoon.

The post is being renamed in honor of Army Sgt. Corey Edwin Garver, who died in Afghanistan in June 2013. He was 26.

Garver was a member of the 506th Infantry Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He died of injuries sustained when a roadside bomb exploded near his patrol in eastern Afghanistan.

The Times Record reports that Post 202 will become the first American Legion post in Maine named after a serviceman killed in either Iraq or Afghanistan.
