The Maine Sheriffs’ Association conducted its first Drug Take-Back program Saturday, collecting more than 23,500 pounds of unused medication across Maine, according to York County Sheriff William L. King Jr.
King said in a news release that the medication was delivered by Hartt Transportation to ecomaine’s waste-to-energy plant on Blueberry Road in Portland, where the medications were destroyed. Ecomaine waived all disposal fees.
King said the collection of 23,520 pounds of medications is the second highest Drug Take-Back in Maine. The federal Drug Enforcement Administration collected more than 27,000 pounds in the spring of 2014.
