A Greely High School senior died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, according to the school district.

The student’s death was announced to students in classroom meetings and to parents in an email message.

Maine School Administrative District 51 School Superintendent Jeff Porter said the 18-year-old boy died at home. Porter declined to identify the student.

MSAD 51 covers Cumberland and North Yarmouth, and also accepts students from Chebeague Island.

A drop-in gathering was to be held at the Greely High School gym Tuesday from 6-8 p.m., followed by a candlelight vigil at 8 p.m. in the school garden.

“The entire counseling staff from the district is up at the high school,” Porter said. “We’ll be providing help for families of students after school hours as well.”

“I can speak for the students and the staff here and the community and say that we’re still reeling. We’re all still processing this through.”
